A.S.A.A. And Matanuska Maid Name First Induction Class Of
Alaska High School Hall Of Fame
ANCHORAGE, Alaska February 7, 2006 - The Alaska School Activities Association (ASAA) announces, and Matanuska Maid presents, the first class of the inaugural Alaska High School Hall of Fame. Twenty individuals and one organization will be inducted into the Hall of Fame during a ceremony on March 19th.
As ASAA celebrates its 50th Anniversary and Matanuska Maid celebrates its 70th, the two organizations came together to offer a lasting legacy to everyday heroes within the realm of high school interscholastic athletics, fine art and academic activities.
The Hall of Fame was established to identify and honor, in a permanent manner, individuals who exhibited high ethical standards and integrity while achieving excellence in high school athletics and activities, as well as others who have distinguished themselves by virtue of exemplary contributions to the advancement of interscholastic athletics and activities in the State of Alaska.
Categories include student athletes, students who participated in fine art and academic activities. Former students must have graduated at least 10 years prior to induction. Other categories include coaches, administrators, officials/adjudicators and major contributors.
2006 INDUCTEES
Mike Cronk – 1987 graduate of Northway High School – a small school basketball legend, considered to be one of the most prolific scorers in Alaska prep basketball history. He went on to play at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. He marks 14 years as a teacher in Northway.
Herbert Didrickson – 1946 graduate of Sheldon Jackson High School (Sitka) – an exemplary basketball player, considered one of the best in Alaska prep basketball; and an all-around outstanding. He played two years at Sheldon Jackson Junior College, and marks several decades as an outstanding community supporter in Sitka.
Elizabeth “Betsy” Haines – 1978 graduate of East Anchorage High school – state record-setting cross-country running and skiing athlete, who competed at the national level as well, including the Lake Placid Olympics in 1980. Community leader in Anchorage, who has been recognized repeatedly by businesses and peers.
Nina Kemppel – 1987 honors graduate of West Anchorage High School – state high school champion Nordic skier. Graduated from Dartmouth College with a economics degree. 1994, 198 and 2002 Olympics competitor. Member of the Athlete Advisory Council to the U.S. Olympics Committee.
Rocky Klever – 1977 graduate of West Anchorage High School – all-conference, multi-sport athlete in high school. Played football at the University of Montana, drafted by the New York Jets in 1982 and played seven years in the National Football League.
Chuck Kopp – 1983 graduate of Cook Inlet Academy – all-around athlete (cross-country running, basketball, wrestling) in high school. He graduated from the University of Alaska Anchorage and from the FBI National Academy of Law Enforcement Administrators. A 17-year law enforcement veteran, he is Kenai’s police chief and city manager, and coaches Cook Inlet’s wrestling team.
Aelin Peterson – 1992 graduate of West Valley High School.
