Proceeds from Holiday Promotion Sales Bolster Palmer Colony House Project

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – October 4, 2006 - The Matanuska Maid brand, and the company name itself, stem directly from the US government’s efforts to relieve poverty during the Great Depression by sponsoring settlement of distressed farm families to the Matanuska Valley from the upper Midwest.  That shared heritage, between the Matanuska Colony farmers and Matanuska Maid, has fostered a close link in recent years between the dairy company and the Palmer Historical Society. image

In recognizing those common roots, and to support the Palmer Historical Society’s efforts to popularize those times among newer Alaskans, Matanuska Maid has recently presented a grant to the Society in support of the Colony House project. “It’s really a pleasure to see this funding go to an organization whose purpose is to refresh, and animate a history of great significance to Alaska, said Joe Van Treeck, President and CEO of Matanuska Maid.

The funding awarded by Matanuska Maid derived from a percentage of its 2005 sales of its holiday-popular eggnog drink. In honor of the company’s 70th Anniversary celebration, Matanuska Maid reprinted its eggnog carton with the famous “Skater Girl” design, a retro design from the 1940s and 50s. Sales of the popular eggnog increased as well, and Van Treeck commented, “It’s proof positive that the Mat Maid heritage is popular with Alaskans young and old, and Matanuska Maid is pleased to be part of preserving its heritage through support to the Historical Society.

The Colony House in Palmer is one of the original dwellings built to house colonists, and is now a local landmark, museum and headquarters for the Historical Society. Van Treeck said the $3700 award has been offered to the Historical Society to further its organizational goals. Bolstering the collection of artifacts and interpretive exhibits are among the Society‚s objectives. The organization has also been a major backer of a documentary film: Far, Far and Away, that chronicles the Colony and subsequent formation of Matanuska Maid.

Matanuska Maid is among the world’s largest dairy processors located in the far north. Offering a full line of dairy, juice and beverage products, Matanuska Maid Dairy celebrates its 70th anniversary in Alaska this year.
